"Images of Nature at Silent Lake Art Festival"
Feature by Lori Schuett
As part of her art program, Pegi Eyers from Peterborough studied paper-making at Georgian College. "I just loved my last year there because I spent the whole time in the paper studio. No one else seemed to be interested, but I was fascinated by the textures, and the whole paper-making process," she states.
Pegi creates gorgeous images called "cast paper assemblage" from wet paper pulp that is pressed into a plaster mold. When removed, the paper is embossed with unique shapes. Eyers uses all kinds of objects to design her collages.
"Sea Turtle" is stunning with gentle water tones and turquoise cut paper, and shells suspended from delicate threads below the ivory paper cast piece. "Hummingbird" depicts the tiny creature on cast paper with a mixed media assemblage of feathers and stones. Many papers are dipped into coffee or tea to create subtle earth tones, to enhance Pegi's creations.

The Handmade & Cast Paper Process
Handmade paper sheets are created from pulp, usually cotton fibre, with dye or colourants and/or other additives such as threads or leaves etc. - whatever catches the eye! The wet pulp is beaten for many hours, lifted from the vat onto screens, and laid or hung to dry. The wet pulp can also be handled to create special effects such as collage and mixed media. Work that is more sculptural can also be made from handmade paper. First, a mold is created from clay, then a plaster cast is taken from the clay. The wet paper pulp (after beaten) is lifted from the vat and "couched" or pressed onto the plaster mold. When dry, the finished paper cast can be worked further with collage and paint, etc. This is a wonderful medium for paper lovers!
