The Medusa Imaginal

PEGI EYERS

Picture

Wearing a Medusa mask, serpent jewellery and snakeskin robes, I embody the ancient feminine force of resistance, seeking to shut down all that is harmful to life, like imperialist patriarchies and other walls of division. If Medusa’s talents are to freeze male violence and warfare, and stop the androcracy in its tracks, then her converse role as nurturer, rewilder and sustainer of the living green world must equally be at play.  Undulating across the land like magnetic lines of earth-emergent serpentine delight, the Medusa mythos inspires us to rage against the machine, and to remember our bond to the Ancestral Mothers and their sacred legacy. Strong in my own Medusa energy, embodying the hard and the soft, the holding and the letting go, I can’t imagine a more empowering role model for women.

NEW BOOK RELEASE ~ Ancient Spirit Rising

BY PEGI EYERS

Picture

Spiritual Ecology, Social Justice,
Re-landing & the Ancestral Arts

Come back to your roots!  Drawing on cultural studies and contemporary social justice, Ancient Spirit Rising examines the loss of our vital ethnocultural connection to tribe and place, and why there is a trend to borrow identities from other cultures. From the wealth of resources available today, an authentic self-identity can be reconstructed from old/new earth-centered societies, using the timeless values of Indigenous Knowledge (IK) as our model.

When we examine New Age ideologies, we notice that a return to earth-emergent practices can often replicate the same colonial patterns we are attempting to undo. Instead of appropriating from Indigenous people, there are more balanced ways to re-land ourselves, and Ancient Spirit Rising offers resources and modalities for authentic self-identity in the revival of a specific heritage or ethnoculture.  In fact, what better place to source the tools and worldviews we need moving forward, than from our own Ancestry?  In the wisdom of the past we will find the seeds for the future.

Reviving our ancestral ways may be our best strategy in an era of massive change and climate disaster. For all who are yearning for a more intimate relationship with the land, today’s exciting movements in animism, rewilding, voluntary simplicity, eco-living, and sustainable communities are all found within the pages of Ancient Spirit Rising.

A weaving  of analysis, evocation and promptings of the heart, Ancient Spirit Rising offers strategies for intercultural competency, uncolonization, rewilding,  restoring an ecocentric worldview, practices for recovering the Old Ways, creating a sustainable future, and reclaiming peaceful co-existence in Earth Community. With extensive notes and exhaustive references, Ancient Spirit Rising  is an essential “compendium for change!”

FEMME: the art exhibition

PEGI EYERS

Picture

FEMME is a group exhibition at Impresario Artisan Gallery in Cobourg showcasing 8 local and regional artists and artisans, who explore how their creativity can heal self, others, community and the Earth. The diversity of themes and media in this exhibition emphasize the healing powers of art-making on the body, mind and soul, and how the expressive arts can become a daily transformative or spiritual tool. Women have always been the wisdom keepers and healers, and we continue to “empower our dreams”  to communicate and connect, and to envision new directions and new worlds through our art practice and healing modalities. Join us as we celebrate the provocative, revelatory and transcendent aspects of Women and the Healing Arts.

"At the deepest level, the creative process and the healing process arise from a single source. When you are an artist, you are a healer ~ a wordless trust of the same mystery is the foundation of your work and its integrity." Rachel Naomi Remen

"Women and the Healing Arts" features FEMME, an exhibition in the main gallery, a Holistic Marketplace featuring the work of artists, artisans and other makers, and a schedule of workshops with modalities in the healing arts.  All welcome!

Urban Art ~ One Wall at a Time

5/11/2021

PEGI EYERS

I've lived in big cities like Vancouver and Toronto, but I've always been drawn to wild places, so embracing the rural life has become an essential requirement for my happiness and peace of mind.  And yet visiting the city for a day or two, and experiencing  diverse offerings in art, music, theatre, literary festivals and global cuisine can be incredibly exciting. On a hot summer day in 2018, I found myself stopping to admire the many street-level murals that line the avenues in downtown Toronto. The vibrant colour and large-scale impact of this public art was so phenomenal, I found myself experiencing the beauty in a somatic way, by immersing my whole body in the composition and reaching up, to embrace the artist's vision. Clearly, the theme of the work changed with the introduction of the human form, and the these kind of spontaneous acts can be one aspect of public art. Overall, the transformation of urban walls into spaces of imagination and joy, is an art lover's dream come true~!

During 28 years of publication, a forum has been created for women to  exchange ideas, personal experiences, expertise and creativity. Beach Fire

we burn huge logs
charm perils outward
keep dragons back
with hawthorn

this hour's dancers
tall grey-bending
around standing stones
cast shadows long on sand

let me gain traction
for courage to dart
out into night

Room 34.2 Back to Natural Hush

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEGI EYERS

Picture

With a wide circulation across Canada and beyond, it is a thrill to have my photography accepted for publication in a thematic issue of Room: Canada's Oldest Literary Journal By and About Women.  Edited by Amy McCall, "Back to Natural Hush" focuses on fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry and art that engages with re-landing in place, our stewardship of the natural world, bioregionalism, localvore, natural cycles of growth and death, the wonder and beauty of the land, and our timeless connection to  the wild. Our bonds to nature are both spiritual and grounding, and in contrast to the distractions of urban life, in nature there is "ample calm awaiting here / to ease jangled voices / back to natural hush." (Excerpt from the poem "Ritardando" by Adele Graf.)

There is beauty in nature everywhere if we stand still long enough to notice it, and the feminine forms that Pegi Eyers has captured in her photographs portray an elegance that can only be found in the natural world.    Editor's Letter by Amy McCall

The Earth that is Her Body / photography / Pegi Eyers
If you look closely, the Earth Goddess can be found where line, form, light, shadow and greenery come together in wild nature.  When we discover the reality of the Goddess's body in the landscape, we are reminded of our own embodiment and connection to the sacred. The divinity and spiritual power of the feminine exists  in us, in Earth Community, and the entire cosmos.

Goddess in the Stone / photography / Pegi Eyers
She is everywhere! To discover the ancient fertility Goddess in stone is powerful magic indeed, connecting us through time and space to the original matriarchal societies.  In  the wild it becomes crystal clear that the divine presence emanating from, and animating the natural world and indeed, the entire universe, has always been FEMININE - abundant, fertile, yin, cyclic, ever-renewing, forgiving, and above all, loving and nurturing.

This exquisite little dress was found by chance in winter's landscape.  The Sacred Feminine exists both in us and the universe around us, and the act of seeing her body in wild nature empowers our spirits as Wise Women and messengers of change.

The Art of the Leaf

In 2016 I took on a "fundraising through the arts" project, and as Event Director, Jurist and Arts Publicist, organized The Art of the Leaf, a Gala and Art Auction Fundraiser for Transition Town Peterborough.  With a small team we installed the exhibition as part of TTP's Purple Onion Festival, and in addition to selling the art by silent auction, offered an educational component and art workshop on the importance of trees and sustainable living. The event was a huge success, and was only made possible through the amazing support of local artists and artisans. Their kind generosity is so much appreciated~!  Given a blank masonite "leaf" form, the diverse multimedia creations submitted to the show were absolutely brilliant.  Here is a sampling of the artwork from that incredible day.

The Art of the Turtle

PEGI EYERS

Picture
From 2010 - 2013 Pegi Eyers organized and curated "The Art of the Turtle," an annual gala and art auction fundraising event for the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. Raising close to $20,000 overall for the Centre, she initiated the submission process, juried work from over 200 local and regional artists, designed the publicity program, created the exhibition catalogues and labels, and set up the shows with the installation team. "The Art of the Turtle" featured incredible support from artists, collectors, animal lovers and the general public, and offered a diversity of turtle-themed works from artists and artisans including painting, mixed-media, sculpture, carving, paper crafts, assemblage, stained glass, fabric design, metalwork, ceramics, jewellery and home decor.  With love and thanks to the many artists who contributed to "The Art of the Turtle!"
