Juchitan de Las Mujeres     limited edition giclee print

The village of Juchitan in Oaxaca, Mexico is home to a communal matriarchal culture.  The women of this indigenous society are fiercely independent  and idiosyncratic.  Their elaborate dress and manner have made them international symbols of women's power.  Inspired by a haunting Graciela Iturbide photograph portraying the joys and sorrows of these magical women.

Inspired by Kim Antieau’s dazzling novel Church of the Old Mermaids, this image evokes the sea and all of its creatures that existed in the desert of the American Southwest in a time before time. The watery realms were home to la Sirenas, the magical Mermaid-Queens.  This mythical antediluvian place has the power to inform our dreams, reflections, stories and art.

An Aztec Goddess of Fire appeared in my dream with messages of inspiration and healing.  I discovered her name was Chantico, and attempted to paint her and the essence of that dream.  We can view our dream images as puzzles to decipher, or be drawn into the world of the dream to be transformed by the forces of nature that are manifesting through it. Dreams are the gifts of the Great Mystery!

Curandera of the Rainbow Path     limited edition giclee print

Curanderas of Mesoamerica follow an ancient tradition deeply rooted in their relationship to the land and the spirits of the earth.  With a loving heart and pure intent, the Curandera is able to connect with ancient spirits and channel their wisdom for healing work.  If one is aligned with the energy of sacred sites, magic can occur, and rainbows often appear at an "emergence point" - a portal where crossings are possible between the worlds.

Curanderas of Mesoamerica follow an ancient tradition deeply rooted in their relationship to the land and the Ancestors.  Establishing inner harmony allows the Curandera to connect with ancient spirits, such as the Zapotec Serpent Goddess from the Valley of Oaxaca.  If one is aligned with the energy of sacred sites, magic can occur, and rainbows often appear at an "emergence point" - a portal where crossings are possible between the worlds.

The story of the young Haudenosaunee woman who embraced Christianity in 1676 is astonishing.  In the clash of cultures during early colonial times, she found the grace to honor a new form of the Great Mystery that appeared to her in the form of Jesus Christ.  In 2012 Kateri Tekakwitha was finally canonized as Canada's first indigenous saint through the Roman Catholic Church.

In the Kawarthas region of Ontario we are blessed with a local Goddess in situ at Kinowagwapkong (The Peterborough Petroglyphs), and the Anishnaabe petroglyph that was created long ago to honor her, the Earth Mother Muzzu-Kummik Quae.  The women's wisdom of the Anishnaabe ~ the Strawberry Teachings ~ speak of the trinity of womanhood who were the Great Mothers of all. The women are the keepers of the water, and the strawberry symbolizes the heart and reminds us of the abundant and life-sustaining unconditional love of Muzzu-Kummik Quae. She is a sacred inspiration to all women, and a vibrant ancient expression of women’s blood mysteries, feminine strength and empowerment.

Goddess of the Teaching Rocks (Kinomagewapkong)

The Peterborough Petroglyphs, a sacred site of global importance, is the largest known concentration of indigenous rock carvings in Canada.  Ancestors of the Anishnaabe people established this holy place, Kinomagewapkong (The Teaching Rocks) on a worldwide meridian of earth energy, or ley line.  A fissure in the rock is thought to have been revered as the entrance to the underworld.  Millennia ago, this same fissure was enhanced with the carving of a woman's womb, breasts and body.  To the ancient ones it was obvious that women, with their regenerative cycles, performed the same functions as the earth, which was the source of all nourishment, protection and procreative power.  Crossing time and space, this petroglyph goddess remains a powerful symbol of women's mysteries and the veneration of the Divine Feminine today.  I have been blessed with many visits to the Peterborough Petroglyphs, and I have a sacred connection to Her, a living feminine presence.  This mystical place has deep significance to us today as we honour ancient matriarchal power, and the Earth Mother, Muzzu-Kummik-Quau.

Prayer to the Goddess
of the Teaching Rocks

O Great Feminine Being, diety of a wild place and keeper of the sacred elements, hear my prayer of gratitude for Bright Blessings received!  O Great Goddess, provider of all that is empowering, you see me with your eyes like sunlight on the rocks, you hear me with your ears like wind in the trees.  I feel your presence and magnetic power - it pulls me to your sacred earth body of which I am a part.  You provide a safe womb-space for my soul, and my own moon blood answers to your sacred red ochre flow.  In and around the placements of technology and disturbances made by man you are waiting, you are open to my cries of yearning, you bless me with your abundance, fertility and procreative power.  I thank you, Great Goddess of Kinomagewapkong, for answered prayer.  How can your miraculous gifts of ripe awakening and expressions of true love ever fade?  Your womb-chalice of nectar, blossom and fruit overflows.  As long as the Great Heart in the depths of the wild places beats, I know you will be there.  Heart to heart, woman to woman, Green Goddess to Green Seer, you are the divine expression of the feminine force in nature that seeks to nurture and liberate us all through the power of love!

The smudging ceremony is an indigenous tradition used to create harmony and peace.  Prayers for cleansing, healing, protection and the creation of sacred space are accompanied by the burning of sacred herbs such as sage, sweetgrass and cedar.  Smoke from this sacred medicine purifies the body, mind and soul.
