These one-of-a-kind pieces, created with paperclay, stamps, pigments, sand, collage elements and other mixed media, evoke the feel and texture of an ancient artifact or archaeological find. With this work, I am inspired by the symbols and expressions of ancient matriarchal or tribal cultures that are connected to sacred sites and the beauty of the living earth.

Inspired by an ancient Anishinaabe petroglyph, I created this Divine Feminine design to honour the womb, the divine place of origin, and the sacred spiral,  symbol of  the eternal path of spirit and the everlasting power of feminine energy, fertility, growth and abundance. The glyph is enhanced by a background of beautiful textured handmade paper.

                         Double Snake Symbol from Ancient Crete

The snake was revered  as the  sacred manifestation of the Goddess throughout the Mediterranean region and Old Europe, as represented by this symbol found on a Cretan carving (2,000 BCE), and the well-known Cretan Snake Goddess statue.  The ability to shed its skin suggested immortality, and the snake became a powerful metaphor for the regenerative life force of the Goddess.  Serpent dieties and myths are found worldwide, and snakes have been  associated with Goddesses, priestesses, prophets, sibyls and oracles.

                                       Tsagaglalal - She Who Watches

She Who Watches, or Tsagaglalal in the Wishram language (Yakama Nation) is a petroglyph carved in stone located on a cliff overlooking the Columbia River in the Columbia Hills State Park, Washington.  In ancient times, Tsagaglalal was the beloved matriarchal leader of all the indigenous people of the Columbia River Gorge region. One day, she expressed the desire to serve her people and the land forever, and in response to this request Coyote transformed her into stone. Tsagaglalal is the wise and enduring Great Mother who watches over the people, the river and the canyon through countless transformations and eons of change. Under the sentient and watchful gaze of Tsagaglalal, this sacred site is extremely important today to the Yakama Nation for ceremonial purposes, to all those performing the work of earthkeepers, and to all those that revere Her and the beauty of the earth.

Tapu'at - Hopi Mother & Child


This beautifully hand-crafted card features an embroidered labyrinth, hand-sewn insert and bead trim.  It is a tribute to the petroglyph and rock-writing traditions of the ancient indigenous cultures of the American Southwest.  The Hopi refer to spiral patterns as symbols of Mother Earth, and the labyrinth (Tapu'at - Mother & Child) represents emergence, birth and rebirth.
